Project:
Create a slam-dunk brochure for a well-known hip-hop dance troupe that would ensure them a place on the roster of the Nike Dance troupe.
Issues:
A very sudden and last-minute call to provide information to the selection group for the Nike Dance Troupe's European and Asian tours left little time to produce the materials needed.
Solution:
During the design and photo-shoot phases we worked closely with the client to compile a significant dossier on goals for the Nike Dance project, future goals and dreams and, of course, their background. They had only one chance to make a winning impression, so we hunkered down and concentrated on the task at hand.

To propel our dancers to the top of the short list, we designed a visual package using a key shot from our photoshoot that makes the connection between an image on paper and their remarkable dance talents. The handstand shot, similar as it is to the letter 'Y,' was so powerful that it led to the logotype 'HYPE' with the dancer's photo substituting for the 'Y.' We created a multi-fold document with a top-page overlay of the 'HYPE' logo, packaged it in a translucent Mylar 9" X 12" catalog envelope, and rush-delivered it to Nike.
_____Outcome:
Culture Shock was awarded a spot on the European Tour. They succeeded so admirably that they received a second invitation to participate the following year for a tour in Russia, Japan, China, India and other countries. Eric Fenn, founding artistic directory of San Francisco Culture Shock, almost a decade on, still uses our logo and format. Design experts say that good design can survive the 'styliste de rigueur.' We like to think this design proves that point.
